Music Monday 01: Thad Cockrell - To Be Loved
A major goal of this blog is to keep me writing, so I’ve decided to try and do have some more regular features.  I can’t promise that I’ll post a music recommendation here every Monday.  I don’t discover good new music often enough to share weekly, but I will try to be fairly consistent.
This week I’ll be discussing an album that has been playing constantly on my iPod for the last several weeks, Thad Cockrell’s To Be Loved.
Last summer, Sandra McCracken (one of my absolute favorite artists) was playing a show here in Nashville, so of course, I had to attend. However, Sandra was actually the opening act.  Thad Cockrell was the headliner. I was familiar with Cockrell in name only, but he won me over quickly during the show. I purchased To Be Loved immediately on my iPhone.
Cockrell could be classified as as singer/songwriter with folk leanings.  He is a Christian, and several of the songs reflect this.  However, the subjects in some of my favorite songs on the album are women. Regardless of the topic, Cockrell is able to craft an amazing song both lyrically and melodically. His strong tenor voice always compliments his songs.
One of my favorite things about this album is the mix.  I attempted to discover who had actually mixed the album, but could not.  This is the problem with buying albums from iTunes. The engineer’s use of reverbs and space almost give the album a heavenly atmosphere.  This is particularly appropriate for songs such as “Great Rejoicing” where the mix gives the listener the feeling that they are listening to the angels rejoicing.
Stand out tracks for me (though I love them all) are “Beauty Has a Name” and “Rosalyn.”   “Beauty” is a love song that Cockrell originally wrote for a film.  Laura and I actually considered using it to walk out of our wedding ceremony.  Rosalyn is another song for a girl whose melody will be stuck in your head for days.
Thad Cockrell is an amazing artist, and To Be Loved is a masterpiece.  Also, be on the lookout in the coming months for his new band Leagues.  I’m very excited to hear what they have to offer.
