Do reminders on HomePod still work if you put your phone on the iOS 13 beta?

…asking for a friend.

Sam and I are currently watching The Force Awakens together. Ideally we would have gotten in his first Star Wars movie before 4-days-old, but this will have to do.

Also, I would have started with A New Hope, but I only have that on DVD and didn’t want to get off the couch.

Also, my mother-in-law told me my five-year-old taught her how to use the HomePod to control lights in our house while we were at the hospital. I’ve never been a prouder father.

What did I do on my first night at home with Sam? Created an Airtable base to keep track of all of his feedings and a Shortcut to quickly get info on the most recent one. Nerd Dad for the win.

Thanks everyone for the kind words on his arrival. We’re so excited.

Meet my son, Sam. Samuel Craig McClellan. He was born yesterday afternoon, a full 10 days early, and is a rockstar (just like his Mama). Everyone is doing great, and we’re so grateful.

🍿 Spider-Man: Far From Home

Loved it. I won’t say more, but I loved it.

Professionals of the World,

If you have a form you need someone to sign, always send it as a PDF, not a Word document.

🔗 Jony Ive Is Leaving Apple, but His Departure Started Long Ago - WSJ

I know this article is designed to put a doom and gloom spin on Apple after Jony’s departure, but it honestly made me glad he’s gone and excited for what’s to come. I may be an eternal optimist, especially with Apple, but the Apple products I have now (while imperfect) are some of my favorite I’ve ever had. I’m incredibly excited about the future of Apple’s platforms.

Updates to My Post to Micro.blog With Categories Drafts Script

Back in January I shared a post linking to a Drafts Action to post to your Micro.blog hosted blog and assign categories to the post.

About once a month, someone reaches out to me with an issue with the script not recognizing their saved Micro.blog token, and not working. I had never run into the issue myself as I run two different, custom versions that allow me to save the credentials both for this blog, and @theclassnerd.

I have however figured out what the problem is, and have updated the script. You can download it from the same place on the Drafts Action Directory. Thanks to how the Action Directory works, the links in my original post all still work and go to the updated script.

For any nerds curious what the problem was, it was in how Drafts handles credentials.

Long before I shared my post with categories script, Matt Birchler had created a script for posting to your blog that also used Drafts’s Credential storage system. He saved this particular credential to Drafts with the title App Token.

var credential = Credential.create("Micro.blog", "Manton Reece's Micro.blog blogging platform");
credential.addPasswordField("apptoken", "App Token");

credential.authorize();
var appToken = credential.getValue("apptoken");

When I created my script, I called the same value a “Micro.blog token” instead. If someone had already installed and saved their credential using Matt’s script, it would sometimes cause an error because the naming wasn’t the same.

So I have changed my script to now use the App Token naming instead of Micro.blog.

I would love to have some people test this out and see if it solves the issues. I can’t do so personally because of the aforementioned custom credential system. If you have my old script installed, delete it, install the new one, and run it. Let me know if it works.

As always, I hope this helps people post to their own blog more easily.

For the last few days, I’ve noticed more and more holes like this in my fence, but couldn’t figure out what was making them. This morning, I saw the culprit: a woodpecker. Watching it work was crazy, but now I’m googling how to deter it from destroying my whole fence.

Happy Birthday to my sweet wife. I think this next year is going to be one of the best, and I’m so glad we get to do it together.

I might have a problem…but tomorrow will be fun.

🍿 Toy Story 4 was great.

Unfortunately, my kids' favorite part was the trailer for Frozen II at the beginning. 😂😰

🍿 Time for Toy Story 4!

Wife to kids: “You’re gonna have a brother forever!”

3-year-old: “We’re gonna have a brother forever!”

5-year-old: “But he’s gonna be dead when he gets old.”

😂 Insert Debbie Downer music.

Next on distracting myself, here’s an adorable picture of my family that is now my phone lock screen. 4 weeks until baby boy’s due date!

I get extremely squeamish and the first aid section of this class is the most graphic thing I have ever seen. My wife saw someone’s innards. I am writing this in the workbook to keep from having a panic attack.

As a teacher and foster parent, I have to do CPR training at least twice a year. And every time, all I can think of is this scene from The Office.

As one of the biggest John Mayer fans around, I continually try to listen to Dead and Company to understand why people enjoy The Dead and hear more of John’s playing.

Several years into this experiment, I still don’t understand the appeal. At. All.

When we started fostering, I never imagined a future where I would receive “Happy Father’s Day” text messages from my kids' biological parents. Yet here we are. This is the weirdest, hardest, but most devastatingly beautiful thing I’ve ever done. I wouldn’t change a thing.
